Good Morning Nigeria! Here’s what you need to know this Saturday morning 🙂. Enjoy!
1. The National Assembly in a statement on Friday in response to President Muhammadu Buhari who accused the lawmakers of alteration in the 2018 Budget, said that the insertion of projects and cuts in the amounts allocated to certain projects in the Appropriation Bill was done to promote federal character. Buhari had stated that the “National Assembly made cuts amounting to N347billion in the allocations to 4,700 projects submitted to them for consideration and introduced 6,403 projects of their own amounting to N578billion.” According to the lawmakers however, the projects proposed by Buhari in the earlier version of the Appropriation Bill violated the federal character and did not reflect the needs of ordinary Nigerians.
2. The National Christian Elders Forum in a press conference issued by its chairman, Solomon Asemota, in Abuja on Friday, kicked against the plan by the Federal Government to set up ranches in 10 states across the nation, alleging that it was a ploy to grab lands for Fulani herdsmen across the nation. The group described the plan as stealth jihad, adding that lands belonging to other Nigerians would be taken and given to herdsmen who would subsequently appoint Emir and claim ownership of the land.
3. Prof. Wole Soyinka on Friday in Abuja at a dinner organized by the International Press Institute said that former President Olusegun Obasanjo is the most hypocritical former leader of Nigeria. Soyinka added that Obasanjo had crossed the red line, threatening to expose him on July 3 in Lagos. “Obasanjo has crossed the red line and I will launch a publication to expose him on July 3 at the Freedom Park in Lagos,” he said. He noted that OBJ was trying to hijack the change movement which he is not worthy to lead, adding that the Coalition of Nigeria Movement should not be glorified. “He is trying to hijack the recovery process in this nation and I say that he is one of the least worthy of one of the former heads of States to lead that kind of movement,” he noted.
4. The Igbo apex socio-political body, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has demanded the release of Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, who was arrested by the operatives of the Department of State Security on Friday. The President of the group, Chief John Nwodo, noted that only the Nigerian Army could disclose the whereabouts of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). Abaribe was apparently arrested by the DSS over the disappearance of Kanu following the invasion of his residence by the Nigerian Army.
