Scientists, Kenyan priests in historic agreement over homosexuals

It is a major win for researchers at the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) folowing a truce with religious leaders over HIV research among homosexuals in the country.
The servants of God had sharply opposed research among gays in the coastal region claiming the institute was initiating young men into homosexuality.

A report by The Standard indicated treading news published a report announcing the historic agreement was reached following intensive engagement with the religious leaders.

Treading published a report saying the truce was reached following an intensive engagement with the religious  
“ The religious leaders realised that they have a role to play in facilitating gays’ social acceptance to advance their access to HIV prevention and care,” read the report.
The are However, lately, the eligious leaders are warming up and are more supportive of sexuality, sexual identities, and same-sex relations.
The truce was achieved after 138 representatives from six denominations — 59 Muslim clerics, 30 Anglican Church pastors, 27 Protestant pastors and 14 Kaya elders — held talks, seminars and training for years.
Others were four Seventh Day Adventists pastors and four Catholic priests, while three religious leaders refused to participate.
The clergy were paid KSh1,000 a day for their time in participating in the exercise that has seen them developing a soft spot for gays.
The exercise was funded through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).
There were also two community liaison officers from KEMRI , two HIV behavioral scientists, and six members from coastal gay community groups.
